Circuit 13 / Oporto -The Ribeira

In Oporto 19th and 20th century neoclassicism and romanticism added interesting monuments to the landscape of the city, like the magnificent Stock Exchange Palace or the Hospital of Saint Anthony, the tile-adorned Sao Bento Train Station and the gardens of the Crystal Palace.

- Palácio da Bolsa
Occupying the site of a Franciscan convent which was destroyed by fire, the Stock Exchange and headquarters of Oporto's Chamber of Commerce was built in 1842. A modern glass building also stands where the convent cloisters once stood, known as the Pátio das Nações. The interior of the building can be visited on weekdays (guide compulsory), and the Moorish Hall, used for official receptions, is particularly worth seeing.

- Cadeiada Relação is the former 18th century prison. The building now shelters the Portuguese Institute of Photography.

- S.Bento train station was built from 1900 to 1915 where the benedictine convent was. The station hall is decorated with azulejos which tell the history of transport in Portuguese scenes.

Sto.António Hospital
Palácio da Bolsa

- Sto. António Hospital was built from 1790 to 1825 by English architect John Carr. It is a good example of the English influence on the city.

- Mercado do Bolhão is the most typical market of fruits, vegetables, fish and meat. Situated in a commercial district, its visit is a must.

- Mercado Ferreira Borges is situated on the Infanta D. Henrique square and is a very good example of iron architecture. Finished in 1888 it wasn't used as a market very much but more as a cultural space.

- Instituto de Vinho do Oporto
This building situated almost next to the stock exchange Palace holds the company that officially guarantees the origin of all marketed Port wine. The white seal over the neck states Garantia do Vinho do Oporto - a guarantee that the wine was grown, aged and bottled in Portugal. Without this seal, it just is not port.

- Casa do Infante, is the house where, according to the legend, prince Henry the Navigator was born; built by king D. Afonso IV, it became the Oporto Customs from the 14th to the 19th century. Now you can find the Municipal Historic archives there.

- The University, a building from the end of the 19th century. That is now occupied by the Vice-chancellor of the university.

University Rectory

- Alfândega Nova was built by French architect Colson in 1860 to hold the customs; is now the Transport and Communications Museum. There is also a gallery for the seasonal exhibitions and a conference room.

- Serralves Foundation, a private institution, of public utility which aims to promote different activities for art. The 30 house Serralves, is in a very beautiful park and is decorated in Art Déco style. The foundation, with the cooperation of the State, also includes a National Museum of Contemporary Art which organizes temporary exhibitions, conferences and concerts. The building was built by Portuguese architect Á lvaro Siza Vieira, the most international of Portuguese architects.

- Palácio de Cristal is the name given to a building demolished in 1951. It had been built for an exhibition and had a glazed dome. The current building dates back to the 50s, it also has a big dome and is used for fairs, exhibitions, concerts, receptions, etc... It is in the middle of a beautiful garden.

- Museu Soares dos Reis was created in 1942 in a neo-classic royal palace, Palácio das Carrancas, dating back to the end of the 18th century. At the time of the napoleonic invasions it was occupied by General Soult. The museum possesses collections of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts (ceramic, china, furniture, silver).

- Museu do Carro Eléctrico was inaugurated in 1992 and has a collection of tramways (eléctricos) and the other cars that circulated in Oporto from 1895. Oporto was the first city on the Peninsula to have this type of vehicle. You will also find the first car used in Oporto, pulled by an animal in 1872.
